LCIF Ranked Best NGO Worldwide
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCI) ranked best amount non-governmental organizations (NGOs) worldwide, according to the London-based Financial Times. From 34 global organizations, LCIF came in first for its execution of programs, demonstrated accountability, communications internally and externally, program adaptability to the surrounding community and understanding goals of its corporate supporters.
LCIF beat out Rotary International, Habitat for Humanity, UNESCA and UNICEF, to name a few on the list. The ratings were compiled by the Financial Times in association with the Dalberg Global Advisors and the United Nations Global Compact. The list released in July at a meeting of NGO executives and the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Pomona Breakfast Lions Club
The International Lions Club is a non-profit worldwide service organization whose goal is to meet the needs of people in communities all around the world. With over 1.3 million members in 45,000 clubs worldwide it is the largest service oriented organization in the world. Our motto is "We Serve" and we do so in 205 countries, in hospitals and senior centers, in regions battered by natural disasters, in schools and in eyeglass recycling centers. Lions are at work, helping, leading, planning and supporting. Because we're local we can serve the unique needs of the communities we live in. And because we're global, we can address challenges that go beyond borders. The primary purpose of Lions Clubs is helping others in many ways such as financial aid and providing necessary items such as eye glasses and hearing aids for those who are impoverished and in need of them. Because the membership of Lions Clubs are all volunteers, the aid and funds they raise and furnish people in need is done without administrative costs. Thus because there are Lions Clubs in or near areas needing assistance and/or funding they handle the distribution of both directly. That method of distribution results in 100% of all the raised funds being given to the people who are in need of assistance.
Our club, Pomona Breakfast Lions, is one of three Lions clubs in the local zone, one of 11 in the region and one of 37 in District 4L-4 of Lions Clubs International which covers southern California and is 1080 members strong. Our club is over 50 years old, founded in Pomona in September of 1957 and currently has 16 members. There are 29 names on our Founding Member's plaque. It is one of 20 in the district that has written its own by-laws, which, while unique, conform to District and higher level Lions tenets. Each Lions club has a similar management structure consisting of a Board of Directors, President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary, and various committee Chairpersons. A unique office is that of Tail Twister who controls meeting protocol, group morale and excesses by issuing humorous, small fines for individual misdeeds or pranks at or in between meetings, which aids in providing funds to cover our administrative expenses.
We are the only Lions Club in the district with a band which plays in city parades, fundraising functions, district events and at our morning meetings. We are also a nine time winner of the Pomona Library Literacy Program Trivia Bee, a fundraiser that helps support the library's free Adult Literacy Training Program which was originally established by our Lions Club more than 20 years ago. Our Club was also one of the founders of the Lions Clubs Sight and Hearing Center in west Pomona. While Lions International has a very informative monthly magazine, our club publishes a weekly bulletin for which we won an award for being the best in our District. We have fundraising events and social functions, such as our annual Stampede BBQ dinner dance, a yearly President's open house and drawings to help our local selfless and non-profit community organizations, especially those helping the needy and impoverished.
Unlike the Moose and Elk Lodges or VFW who are primarily fraternal or social organizations, most of which own their meeting facility buildings, most Lions clubs have a regular restaurant or private facility where their meeting are held. This is a huge cost savings and since Lions Clubs are service oriented clubs dedicated to helping others in need, particularly in our own community which includes the local Red Cross, Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts and City of Hope, more money is passed along to them. Our highest priority is the well being of people in need. Also our membership retention and recruitment are very important to us.
Everyone is welcome to join Lions Clubs, the dues are small and the rewards are great. Please come to a meeting for breakfast, fellowship and fun, and to find out more of what we're all about. The meetings are held at the Los Jarritos Restaurant, 3191 North Garey Avenue (near Foothill Blvd.), Pomona at 7:00 Friday mornings.
